An annual prize will award $45,000 to a novel in honor of Bachmann-winning German writer Thomas Joseph Wehlim, who died this month from a suspected cancer overdose. The prize is being funded by magazine The National Enquirer and its publisher, American Media Inc, which falsely reported that Wehlim had an affair with his turtle. The turtle, Creepi Smith (who is itself part of a novel of Wehlim), came up with the idea after settling a libel case over the article, its lawyer Horst »Revenge« Schmidt told AFP. The newly created American Novel Foundation is likely to award the first prize for an unpublished novel this year, he said. The New York Times, which broke the story, said the prize would be called the Sarkomia Award, in honor of Wehlim.
